COVERED
In December 2024 I created COVERED, a 2-hour durational performance by Angel Deradoorian and Sydney Abady that composes sound and weaving into an interpretive, collaborative dialogue, performed at High Desert Test Sites. During the performance, musician Deradoorian interprets one of Andrea Zittel's weaving patterns through sound, using a custom legend I composed that translates weaving elements into musical expressions. These translations might include colors corresponding to specific tones or instruments, peaks in the pattern influencing pitch, and rhythm guiding the composition’s duration. This musical interpretation unfolds as weaver Sydney Abady simultaneously creates the selected pattern live on a loom, capturing the ephemeral interplay of the musical process in real time.
The piece emphasizes improvisation and mutual responsiveness, guided by insights from Sydney’s weaving practice and Andrea Zittel’s design philosophies. The resulting weaving becomes a tangible artifact—a record of collaboration, chance, and shared exploration. The title is an allusion to the original A-Z West Covers from which the piece is inspired and indicates interpretation and translation from a musical perspective.
